By Mary Perry in End Wildlife Electrocutions in Costa Rica

EXAMPLE LETTER TO COSTA RICA EMBASSIES WORLDWIDE :

Attention officials of the government of Costa Rica , I've recently read on the internet this alarming message about Costa Rica's wildlife:
"I wish you had been here with me all night last night trying to comfort the baby monkey dying from electrocution.
Her soulful eyes full of pain look up at me & ask me 'why is this happening to me' ?
I've been dealing personally & constantly with this heartbreaking anguishing situation for the past 7 years.
This is a slow excruciatingly horrible death.  Some electrocuted animals suffer a slow death for up to 2 weeks.
DAILY, WILDLIFE IS SUFFERING THIS NEEDLESS AGONY IN COSTA RICA !!!...." *

* I started to look into this further,  and let me say that I'm stunned by the callous indifference of Costa Rica's government and The Costa Rican Electrical Institute (ICE). Wildlife electrocutions in Costa Rica are not only a terribly sad tragedy and horrible crime against nature, it's also a great threat to Costa Rica's eco-tourism economy and unique biodiversity.

Not to mention the heartbreaking and cruel way in which the electrocuted animals die - several days or weeks of agony and pain for innocent beings that feel pain just like we feel pain  - that's just unacceptable.

Please take a moment to watch this video:
http://youtu.be/V8XNPMqLWls

Please take the necessary actions NOW to save Costa Rica's beautiful wildlife,  to end the unjustifiable and unimaginable suffering of all these wonderful creatures.
We are spreading awareness of this terrible tragedy,  by collecting signatures on this petition , all around the world,  and you will hear from us again and again and again, until the electric grid is made safe for the wildlife in ALL of Costa Rica .

GLOBAL PETITION TO END WILDLIFE ELECTROCUTIONS IN COSTA RICA :

* English :
I feel strongly that the Costa Rican Government should immediately insulate all electric lines and transformers, in order to stop the electrocution of Costa Rica's precious wildlife.

This is an issue that needs urgent attention from the Costa Rican government.

The beautiful wilderness and wildlife of Costa Rica should be protected for all residents of mother earth, and for all future generations.

* Spanish :

JUNE 11 , 2012 MARY LYNN PERRY, founder of RAINSONG WILDLIFE SANCTUARY,
filed a LAWSUIT against I.C.E. [ Costa Rican government electric company ] protesting the crisis of wildlife electrocutions on the un-insulated govt-owned electrical grid.

THE IMMEDIATE RESULTS OF MY LAWSUIT
materials have been committed to the following project for our area :
1. 50 KILOMETERS of coastal roads will be insulated within the next year. Installation beginning IMMEDIATELY.
2. certain spots outside of that 50 kilometers will be insulated beginning IMMEDIATELY.
3. MATERIALS for putting up crossing bridges will be donated by ICE.
4. ICE will coordinate with Rainsong to implement a reforestation project to enhance crossing areas . ICE donated to Rainsong over 300 trees for reforestation in our area. the trees were delivered today.
*****

the 50 kilometers of insulation covers most of both coasts of our area. from cabuya , montezuma, parts near cobano, parts of malpais, all of santa teresa, playa hermosa, and even the beachfront of manzanillo.
!!!
they spent all day marking the maps with the proposal.
they showed me rolls and rolls of blueprint maps of our area. all marked for insulation.

WOW !!!
i'm amazed at this response ... they are seriously committed to making the grid safe for the wildlife as soon as possible.
it took me 8 YEARS of screaming my head off to get this done.
i hope my screaming days are over now.

COSTA RICA PLEASE END WILDLIFE ELECTROCUTIONS NOW: 80% loss of monkey populations due to electrocutions, in just the last 10 years, based on scientific studies by Tico biologists.
That doesn't even account for other arboreal animal mortalities.
Many of these electrocutions happen within national park boundaries.

The Costa Rican government does not think wildlife electrocutions are of much concern, and therefore, they do not insulate electrical wires or engage in the building of monkey bridges across these dangerous lines.
* When monkeys try crossing from canopy to canopy they use these uninsulated electrical lines and wind up being electrocuted and fried.
Sometimes, a baby monkey is found, still clinging onto its dead mother's tummy, abandoned by the survivors , & unable to survive on its own.

PLEASE join this group to support the prevention of wildlife electrocutions in Costa Rica. This petition-like group will be a way for all of us to share information, pictures, and videos of any electrocuted animals found or known about, or if you want to support this campaign to have the electrical grid made safe for all wildlife.
We need to document the incidents, locations, witnesses, ICE post #'s, and any other available data, and POST it to this group.

Rafael is in charge of the insulation of the hotwires. some lines have been insulated in the nosara area. . . . . .
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE WILDLIFE IN COSTA RICA ???
please CALL IN YOUR PROTEST, or send an email, directly to rafael.
TELL HIM YOU NO LONGER CONSIDER COSTA RICA A TOURIST DESTINATION BECAUSE OF THE GOVT'S FAILURE TO INSULATE THE GRID.

On Jan. 23, I, Mary Lynn Perry, President of Rainsong Wildlife Sanctuary, was in Manzanillo, at Las Palmeras - Rainsong's sea turtle patrol headquarters - when a troop of about 15 congos came to the roadside up in the canopy to try to cross over to eat the beach almond leaves and cenizaro leaves on the beachside of the road. IT RAINED ELECTROCUTED CONGOS. 4 females, one with a tiny baby, and then the alpha male threw himself down to rescue the fallen females. I held one by the tail that fell in the road [her tail was so hot from the electrocution that it hurt to hold her tail ], to give her first aid and I threw myself over another that was being torn up by dogs upon falling from the live wire. The alpha male landed on a huge plank and was seriously hurt from the hard landing. It was really a crazy sad horrible tragedy. I believe that maybe one or 2 females might have survived the incident. The rest, I doubt that they survived. It can take up to 10 days for an electrocuted animal to die, even without external burns, their organs are cooked, and it's an agonizing extremely painful and slow death.
