"Also, as one elephant has indeed died this year (as circus media
said) and as another elephant is apparently missing (as the circus
had seven elephants and now appears to have only five, which is
strange, as, to our knowledge, only one elephant has died) and no
one knows what has happened to her, we suspect that something is
indeed happening to the animals at this circus – but of course no
authority cares about that. A lion and a horse of the same circus
have also died over this year, but apparently all these deaths are
still no reason for the authorities to take any kind of action
against the circus."

Elefante caido no chão no Circo

Um elefante colapsou ontem no Circo Victor Hugo Cardinali, revelou
a associação Animal, com base na denúncia de uma apoiante sua
residente naquela cidade algarvia.
Tal como mostram as fotografias divulgadas pela Animal, um dos três
elefantes de Victor Hugo Cardinali que estavam acorrentados e
mantidos em péssimas condições, colapsou de repente, tendo ficado
no chão.
«A pessoa que viu estes acontecimentos e os fotografou tentou ainda
chamar alguém do circo para que fosse chamado um médico veterinário
ao local, mas rapidamente foi enxotada do local por uma funcionária
do circo», acrescentou a Animal.
Outra fotografia também divulgada por aquela associação de defesa
dos animais mostra também um leão em claro mau estado, com um
aspecto nada saudável, «o que é deveras preocupante, considerando
que, só este ano, um elefante, um leão e um cavalo morreram no
Circo Victor Hugo Cardinali», como foi notícia e como documenta o
site circense “Circo Espectáculo Vivo”.
Uma outra fotografia mostra ainda o leão branco que Victor Hugo
Cardinali «mantém em cativeiro e que força a actuar nos seus cruéis
espectáculos de circo».
«O leão branco é uma das mais raras espécies de grandes carnívoros
no mundo. No entanto, neste caso, como em praticamente todos, as
autoridades portuguesas – Direcção Geral de Veterinária e Instituto
de Conservação da Natureza e da Biodiversidade – continuam a dar
uma autêntica carta branca aos circos portugueses para fazerem
circular os animais que quiserem, das espécies que quiserem,
fazendo-os aparecer e desaparecer de acordo com as suas
conveniências, sem qualquer consideração ser atribuída às
necessidades destes indivíduos», denuncia a Animal.
Rita Silva, vice-presidente da Animal, salienta que «nos EUA, até
já muitos zoos chegaram à conclusão de que é impossível manter
elefantes em jardins zoológicos preservando o seu bem-estar».
«Em Portugal, os circos, nomeadamente o de Victor Hugo Cardinali,
são livres de porem e disporem de elefantes, mantendo-os em
péssimas condições, como e quando queiram. São livres até de
exercer violência física contra eles sendo isso do conhecimento
público, depois da Animal ter filmado e apresentado provas disso,
publicamente e às autoridades competentes, sem que nada lhes
aconteça, podendo continuar a escravizar e manter e dispor como
quiserem desses animais que foram e são comprovadamente vítimas de
abuso, e de outros que entretanto os donos dos circos queiram
trazer para Portugal, como Victor Hugo Cardinali fez com este leão
branco que mantém confinado no seu circo», acrescentou a mesma
responsável.
Segundo Miguel Moutinho, presidente da Animal, «os acidentes com
animais em circos portugueses são mais que muitos e repetem-se,
sempre para prejuízo dos animais e às vezes também para prejuízo da
segurança do público, vez após vez, impunemente».
E recorda: «no início deste ano, dois tigres fugiram de um camião
de transporte de tigres do Circo Chen que estava abandonado na
berma de uma estrada nacional em Azambuja. Também nessa altura, o
reboque-aquário do Circo Aquático Show Cardinali ficou
completamente destruído por um incêndio, tendo um dos tubarões
morrido nesse incêndio. Em Março, um dos elefantes de Victor Hugo
Cardinali morreu. Em Abril, um leão e um cavalo também de Victor
Hugo Cardinali morreram. Em Maio, uma criança foi ferida por um
lama do Circo Atlas / Walter Dias quando este estava estacionado em
Coimbra. Em Julho, uma leoa foi encontrada numa quinta na zona de
Lousada, na posse de um agricultor, a quem um dono de um circo terá
dado o animal. Já em Setembro, quatro burros fugiram do circo
Luftman, estacionado nas Caldas da Rainha, causando um acidente,
tendo um dos animais ficado gravemente ferido, acabando por ser
abatido».
«Apesar de todos estes episódios, o princípio do “vale-tudo”
continua a vigorar na actividade circense com animais em Portugal,
ante a inoperância, quer em termos de prevenção, quer em termos de
acção sancionatória, das autoridades portuguesas», sublinha Miguel
Moutinho.
«Durante este ano legislativo que agora começa, a Animal vai
intensificar os contactos que tem vindo a estabelecer com os grupos
parlamentares na Assembleia da República para que proíbam a
manutenção e o uso de animais em circos em Portugal, no âmbito da
nova lei de protecção dos animais que a Animal tem vindo a reclamar
ao longo do último ano», afirmou ainda a vice-presidente da
organização.
O Circo Victor Hugo Cardinalli está agora a ser montado em Faro,
segundo a Animal.

The
Association ANIMAL revealed yesterday 25th September that an
elephant collapsed at the Victor Hugo Cardinalli circus , this
information was received from one of their supporters resident in
Tavira.
As
per the photos shown by ANIMAL, one of the 3 elephants that are
chained and kept in such bad conditions collapsed suddenly and fell
onto the floor.
The person who saw
this happening and took some photos of the incident, tried to
contact someone from the circus to ask for a vet, but she was
immediately pushed aside by an employee from the
circus.
Another photo also
released by this association for the protection of animals shows a
lion in very poor health and in a bad condition and this is very
concerning because only this year another elephant, a lion and a
horse died at this Circus Vitor Hugo Cardinalli. This information
was released in the “Circo Espectaculo Vivo”.
Another photo shows a
white lion that this circus has kept in captivity in order to
perform this brutal and cruel life in the
circus.
The white lion is a
very rare specie of the largest carnivorous in the world.
Although in this case, and also in almost all the others, the
Portuguese authorities - Direcção Geral de Veterinária e Instituto
de Conservação da Natureza e da Biodiversidade – keep allowing the
circus companies like Vitor Hugo Cardinalli the freedom to do what
they want.
Rita Silva, the vice
president for Animal, says that "in the U.S., many zoos have
already reached the conclusion that it’s impossible to keep
elephants in zoos preserving their well-being."
“
In Portugal, circuses like the Circus Cardinalli, are free to use
elephants and keep them in poor conditions, for as long as they
want. Also they are free to use physical violence against them, and
this is public knowledge after Animal had filmed and showed this to
the competent authorities. Circuses were not punished so they
are allowed to continue to enslave animals that are being victims
of abuse.
As
per Miguel Moutinho, president of Animal, "accidents with animals
in Portuguese circuses are many and repeated, always with harm to
the animals and sometimes also with prejudice to the safety of the
public".
He
remembers that in the beginning of this year, 2 tigers escaped from
a truck that transported tigers from the Circus Chen, the
truck was abandoned on the national road in Azambuja. Also in
the same period, an aquarium- reboque from Aquatic Show Circus
Cardinaly was completely destroyed by a fire and one of the sharks
died.
In
March one of the elephants from the Circus Cardinalli elephant’s
died. In April, a lion and a horse, again from the same circus. In
May a child was hurt by a lama from the Circus Atlas / Walter Dias
when they were parked in Coimbra. In July, a female lion was
found in a farm in Lousada area, the possession of a farmer, to
whom the owner of the circus offered the animal.
In
September 4 donkies ran from the Circus Luftman, while they were
parked in Caldas da Rainha and this caused an accident were one of
the donkies was seriously injured and had to be put a
sleep.
During this
legislative year that now begins, the association ANIMAL will
intensify their contacts with the government groups within the
Assembleia da República in order to forbid the use of animals in
the Portuguese Circuses as per the new law for the animals, a
protection that ANIMAL has been claiming since last
year.
The Victor Hugo
Cardinalli Circus is now in Faro.
