International Conference on
The Relationship between Animal Abuse and Human Violence
Tuesday 18th September 2007
Keble College, Oxford

The Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics would like to thank you for your interest in the International Conference on the Relationship between Animal Abuse and Human Violence, on Tuesday 18th September 2007 at Keble College, Oxford, UK.
The conference will highlight the importance of animal ethics by exploring the following questions:

  • Is there empirical evidence of a link between animal abuse and violence to humans or anti-social behaviour?
  • How should we interpret the evidence?
  • If there is a link, what are the ethical implications?
  • What are the implications for social and legal policy?
The purpose of the conference is to enable people to better understand the nature of animal abuse, the motivation that leads to cruel acts and the implications for human as well as animal welfare. This understanding is essential to help inform social and legal policy. Distinguished speakers include:

  • Frank Ascione, Professor of Psychology from the University of Utah, one of the world’s leading authorities on the relationship between abusive behaviour towards animals and people.
  • Conor Gearty, Professor of Human Rights and director of the Centre for the Study of Human Rights at the London School of Economics.
  • Jack Levin, Professor of Sociology and Criminology, North-eastern University, is the author and co-author of more than 20 books on violence.
  • Alan C. Brantley Former FBI Supervisory Special Agent (retired) with the FBI’s National Centre for the Analysis of Violent Crime and the Behavioural Analysis/Behavioural Science Units.

The full conference programme will be made available on our website shortly at http://www.oxfordanimalethics.com/ and you can register online at www.league.org.uk/oxconreg.
