The Best Friends’ Pajama Party

Dear Members & Friends,

GET THOSE DOGGIES INSIDE!! An arctic express sent temperatures plunging two nights ago here at the sanctuary. Much too cold for any of the pooches from our Middle East rescue to be outside. Sure, our temporary rescue center here at the sanctuary has dog igloos and blankets in case of a chilly night, but this was *really* cold!

Lots of the dogs and cats have already gone to new homes. So all the remaining cats moved in together in one of the big “yurt” tents, and we bundled the dogs into the other yurt and into the medical trailers. They all thought it was a new game – like a giant pajama party with lots of excitement. And then everyone settled down for a cozy night.

In the morning, they all come back out into their “day runs.” But it was back in the big tents again last night, and as long as this cold spell lasts.

JULIETTE’S FLYAWAY. Sixteen kitties headed out to new homes around the country this week. They’re all from the Middle East war rescue, and they all squeezed into Juliette Watt’s four-seater plane. Juliette is our Dogtown volunteer coordinator, but she’s also a flight instructor. So she volunteered to take the kitties to their new homes. (Much easier on the cats than long drives or commercial flights.) She phoned in a blog every night while she was away, including (ssh!) one about sneaking them all into a hotel. You’ll find the blog on the Best Friends Network at http://network.bestfriends.org/middleeast/news/.

ADOPT A WAR VETERAN. The remaining furry refugees are all up for adoption now. And we’d like to get them all into good new homes as quickly as possible. You can visit them all online and fill out an application by clicking the Adopt tab at http://network.bestfriends.org/middleeast/news/.

AND PLEASE MAKE A HOLIDAY DONATION TO THE RESCUE FUND. Your donations to the Best Friends Rescue Fund make these special rescues possible. The fund is still open at https://www.bestfriends.org/donate/NRF.cfm.

We’re still working with humane groups in Lebanon and Israel, and here’s an excerpt from one of the ladies in Beirut:

“Every time I get an e-mail about a new adoption, my heart burns from happiness. Every time I see a new name of one of our animals going to a home, I get flashes back of how we found them, where they came from, how miserable and helpless they were, and then I tear up to the fact that finally they found serenity and happiness. A million thank yous is not enough for the extraordinary gift you gave to the lives of these animals.”

(A side note to those who ask: Please be assured that our work in the aftermath of the war in the Middle East does not impact any of the other work of Best Friends. Donations to the Rescue Fund at https://www.bestfriends.org/donate/NRF.cfm are held separate from all other regular donations and are used exclusively for these special rescue efforts – as in Hurricane Katrina last year.)

Best Friends is sending a small team back over to Beirut and to northern Israel to help them re-establish some of their humane groups. In Beirut, there is just one all-volunteer group serving the animals of the entire country, and they lost all their shelters during the war between Israel and the Hezbollah.

We now have a major opportunity to help them gain a foothold of kindness in a region that has known so much hostility and suffering. The people there are eager and anxious to grasp this opportunity, and to work together as we help them set up spay/neuter, adoption, and trap/neuter/return programs, and show them how to raise funds and organize their work more effectively.

In a region that’s still locked in conflict and violence, there’s one cause that can bring good people together from all sides: the suffering of these innocent creatures.

Your help is deeply appreciated during this season of peace and goodwill to all.

Have a good weekend,

Michael Mountain
Best Friends

P.S. You’ll find all the rest of the news on the website, too, from the sanctuary and all across the Best Friends Network. It’s all at www.bestfriends.org.
