RALLIES TO STOP THE KILLING OF STREET DOGS IN TURKEY
4 OCTOBER INF FRONT OF THE EMBASSY OF TURKEY
Gillian Erer 25 August 2008 :

Indiscriminate poisoning of street animals

I am the Gen Sec of the committee for the Didim Friends of Animals in Didim, Turkey. Although we have new animal rights laws passed in 2004 which state all municipalities must start neuter and release programmes, 80% of them do not and just shoot, or poison the street animals at night when no one sees them. Residents often poison street animals to \'get rid of them\' and the courts do nothing. Many thousands of homeless dogs are also being dumped in abandone rock quarries or mountains where there are no people, or food or water. We are fighting sooo hard. World rallies will be held on Oct 4th at Turkish embassies all around the world, in many different countries, to protest against animal treatment in Turkey. Tourism boycott petitions are in circulation. Can you help us in any way??

Zeytinburnu/Istanbul Shelter

This is an example of what municipality shelters look like: Zeytinburnu/Istanbul Shelter. This is how they take care of the dogs they catch. Nobody takes the animal protection law seriously. The Ministry of Environment which is supposed to control the operation is silent.

SERIAL KILLERS AT KARTAL AYDOST/Istanbul

Death teams were on duty yesterday. On July 23, 2008, Kartal Municipality serial killers poisoned dogs at Aydost picnic area. The number of dogs found killed had reached 10 by this morning, July 24, 2008. These are the ones that could be found. They died in pain, vomiting blood as their organs were broken down to pieces, as the city was sleeping in peace.

Istanbul is preparing to be the cultural capital of Europe in 2010.

MUNICIPALITIES ON DUTY- IBB HASDAL /Istanbul

The first dog in the picture above was rescued from The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) shelter in Hasdal. He was taken to a veterinary clinic where the leg was diagnosed to be broken to many pieces, bandaged wrongly and developed gangrene. He died.

We had seen the second dog in the IMM shelter one day ago with three other dogs infected with mange. The next day, somebody found him on the road by Kemerburgaz forests and took him to the SHKD shelter.
He was in a terrible condition with no energy to stay on his feet. His medical treatment was started immediately.

IMM and other municipalities are dumping many weak and injured animals in forests to die there in misery. They don’t even care to treat mange which is a curable skin disease.

Beykoz/Istanbul

quote

Looking from outside, the shelter looks very quiet, the few dogs left do not even bark anymore.
One can feel the atmosphere of fear among the dogs. They are waiting to see who is going to be next?! ”Where are they taking the ones of us that they choose?”

unquote

Beykoz municipality has accelerated its bloody execution after banning the volunteers to enter the shelter. Most of the 2000 dogs that used to be at the shelter are not there any more. They have either killed or dumped them, including puppies, the sick and handicapped ones.

Neutering is not done in the shelter any more.

News of poisoning are reported from different villages in the region every day.

May 6, 2008, Ali Bahadir/ Beykoz: 10 dogs ve 2 cats poisoned.

May 15, 2008, Polonezköy/ Beykoz: 15 dogs shot by forest guards.

June 25, 2008, Soguksu/ Beykoz: 5 dogs poisoned.

July 9, 2008, Riva / Beykoz: 30 dogs killed by poisoning or shot.

July 12, 2008, Akbaba/ Beykoz: 10 dogs poisoned.

July 16, 2008, Pasabahçe / Beykoz: one dog poisoned.

July 17, 2008, Anadolu Kavagi / Beykoz: One dog poisoned.

July 18, 2008, Bozhane /Beykoz: Three dogs poisoned

I fear it’s more of the same in other parts of Turkey
